AEO Marketing: A Guide for B2B Startups
· Cole Stark · 6 min read
AEO marketing is the work of getting your brand into the answers that search features and AI assistants give, not just the links underneath them. Answer engine optimization (AEO) means finding the questions your buyers ask and answering each one directly. It also means structuring pages so the answer is easy to lift, and earning enough trust that the engine picks you. Most of it is good SEO with a sharper focus on questions.
Below is what AEO covers, how it relates to SEO and GEO, the tactics that work, and how to tell whether it's working.
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization is optimizing content to be the answer, rather than one of ten blue links. An answer engine is anything that responds with an answer instead of a list: Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews, voice assistants, and chat assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude.
The idea predates AI chat. It started with featured snippets and voice search, where one result got read out or boxed at the top. AI answers raised the stakes, because now the answer is written from several sources and the user may never click.
You can't choose to be the answer. Google's documentation on featured snippets is blunt about it: its systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet, and you can't mark a page as one. AI assistants work the same way. What you control is how good a candidate your page is.
How AEO relates to SEO and GEO
The three terms overlap heavily:
- SEO gets pages ranking in search results.
- AEO gets your content chosen as the direct answer to a question, in a snippet, an AI Overview or a chat response.
- Generative engine optimization (GEO) gets your brand cited and described accurately in AI-generated answers across assistants.
In practice they're one program. The pages that get chosen as answers are almost always pages that already rank. AEO and GEO add emphasis on questions, extractable answers and third-party trust. I use GEO as the umbrella term in my guide to generative engine optimization, and I'll compare SEO vs GEO vs AEO side by side in a separate post.
AEO marketing tactics that work
Find the questions your buyers ask
Good AEO marketing starts with real questions, not keywords. Pull them from Google's "People also ask" boxes, your sales and support calls, forum threads, and the prompts buyers type into chat assistants. Group them by stage, from understanding the problem to comparing vendors.
Questions from sales calls are the most valuable. They're specific, they come in your buyers' words, and competitors rarely answer them in public.
Answer first
Put the answer in the first one or two sentences of the page or section, in about 40 to 60 words, then explain. An answer engine is looking for a passage it can lift whole. A page that builds up to its point makes that hard.
Use the question as the heading when it matches how people ask it, and keep one question per section.
Use FAQs, without expecting rich results
FAQ sections collect the questions a page doesn't cover in its main body, each with a short, standalone answer. They're easy for AI answers to quote and they catch long-tail searches.
One thing changed this year. Google deprecated FAQ rich results, and they stopped appearing in Google Search on May 7, 2026. FAQ markup no longer earns you the expandable questions under your listing, so write FAQs for readers and answer engines, not for the search result display.
Add structured data that matches the page
Structured data tells search engines what a page is about: an article, a product, a software application, an organization. Add the types that genuinely describe the page, and keep them consistent with the visible content.
Be one clear entity
Describe your company the same way everywhere: your site, directory listings, review profiles and your founders' bios. Answer engines reason about things and their relationships, and a consistent description makes you easier to recommend accurately.
Earn mentions elsewhere
For comparison questions, answer engines lean on reviews, publications and community threads more than on your own site. Honest comparison pages help, and so do reviews and coverage you don't control.
How to optimize for AEO on existing pages
You don't need new content to start AEO marketing. Take your ten most important pages and, for each one:
- Write down the question it answers, in the buyer's words.
- Rewrite the opening so it answers that question in two sentences.
- Turn vague headings into the questions people actually ask.
- Add an FAQ for the follow-up questions the page skips.
- Check that the page renders without JavaScript and that AI crawlers aren't blocked.
- Update facts, screenshots and dates where they've gone stale.
That's most of AEO for an existing site, and it improves the pages for human readers too.
What to measure
Answer engines don't report query volume, so measuring AEO marketing is directional. I track four things:
- Presence in AI Overviews and featured snippets for target keywords, which most rank trackers now show.
- Referral sessions from AI assistants by landing page. ChatGPT, for example, tags its links with
utm_source=chatgpt.com. - Mentions and citations in a fixed set of buyer prompts, rerun monthly.
- Signups from the pages you optimized, because that's what pays for the work.

Make AEO marketing part of your SEO
AEO marketing works best as part of your SEO program, not a separate line item with its own agency. Rank first, answer questions directly, structure pages so answers are easy to lift, and earn trust on other sites. If you're weighing outside help, here's when to hire an AEO consultant, and my SEO and GEO services cover the whole program.
AEO FAQs
What does AEO stand for in marketing?
In marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimization: optimizing content so search features and AI assistants choose it as the direct answer to a question. It covers featured snippets, Google's AI Overviews, voice assistants and chat assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude.
Is AEO the same as SEO?
AEO isn't the same as SEO, but it depends on it. SEO gets pages ranking, and AEO gets your content chosen as the answer, which usually happens to pages that already rank. Treat AEO as an extension of your SEO program, with more focus on real questions, answer-first writing and third-party trust.
Does FAQ schema still help AEO?
FAQ schema helps AEO much less than it used to. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search on May 7, 2026, so the markup no longer changes how your listing looks. FAQ sections themselves still help, because short, standalone answers are easy for AI assistants to quote.
Which answer engines matter most for B2B?
For B2B, Google still matters most, through its AI Overviews and featured snippets, because buyers comparing vendors still search there. ChatGPT is next for research questions, followed by Perplexity, Claude and Gemini depending on your audience. Check your own referral data to see where your buyers actually come from.
How long does AEO take to work?
AEO takes about as long as SEO, because answer engines mostly pick pages that already rank. Rewriting existing pages to answer questions directly can show up in featured snippets and AI answers within weeks of being recrawled. New pages take months, like any new page in search.
