How to Rank in ChatGPT Search: What Works
· Cole Stark · 6 min read
How to rank in ChatGPT search comes down to being a page ChatGPT finds and trusts when it decides to look something up. Rank in the search engines it draws on, publish your facts as plain text on your own site, earn mentions on third-party sites, and let OpenAI's crawler in. There's no ChatGPT ranking you can buy or submit to, and most answers don't involve a search at all.
This post is the ChatGPT-specific version of my guide to generative engine optimization. If you're new to the topic, start there.
How ChatGPT search works
ChatGPT doesn't search the web for every prompt. When OpenAI launched ChatGPT search in October 2024, it said ChatGPT chooses to search based on what you ask, and that search draws on third-party search providers plus content from partners like news and data publishers.
How often it searches is the first surprise. Ahrefs analyzed 66.6 million responses from logged-out ChatGPT sessions and found that only 14.4% needed a web search. The rest came from what the model already knew.
When it does search, it rewrites the prompt into its own queries, a process called query fan-out. Ahrefs counted about 1.6 fan-out queries per search on average, across roughly 15 million fan-outs from August and September 2026.
So there are two ways into an answer. You can be in the model's training data, which you can't edit on any useful timeline, or you can be in the results it retrieves when it searches, which you can. To rank in ChatGPT, focus on the second.
ChatGPT ranking factors you can influence
OpenAI doesn't publish ChatGPT ranking factors. Its publishers and developers FAQ says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search and explains how to allow its crawler, but not how sources are chosen. The evidence comes from outside studies instead.
Search rankings
Seer Interactive compared GPT-4o answers to 10,000 questions with search rankings and found that page-one Google rankings correlated with brand mentions at about 0.65. Bing rankings correlated at about 0.5 to 0.6, and backlinks barely registered. If you don't rank in search engines, ChatGPT's search has little reason to find you.
Official sources
ChatGPT goes to the source for facts. In the Ahrefs study, 6.8% of fan-out queries used the site: operator, and 75.9% of the most common site: searches pointed at a brand's own site. For factual questions, 84.4% of prompts cited at least one official source.
That makes your own pricing, specs, integrations and support pages ranking assets. If they're missing, vague or hidden behind a login, ChatGPT cites someone else's version.
Third-party coverage
For comparison questions, the share citing an official source dropped to 68.3%. When buyers ask which tool is better, ChatGPT leans more on reviews, comparisons and publications. Ahrefs' advice is to pursue third-party reviews and head-to-head pages, not just your own product pages.
Freshness
Fan-out queries often add the current year. In September 2026, "2026" appeared in 22.9% of the fan-out queries Ahrefs studied, up from 17.6% in August. Pages that look current match those queries better than pages last touched two years ago.
Crawler access
ChatGPT can only cite what it can read. OpenAI says to make sure you aren't blocking OAI-SearchBot, its search crawler, in robots.txt. Check your CDN settings too, since some block AI crawlers by default.
How to rank in ChatGPT search: a checklist
Here's how I'd work through it for a startup:
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your CDN, and confirm your key pages return content without JavaScript.
- Publish your pricing, plans, specs, integrations, security details and support policies as plain text on crawlable pages.
- Start every important page with a two-sentence answer to the question it targets.
- Get indexed and ranking in Google and Bing, using the SaaS SEO basics. Bing Webmaster Tools shows how Bing sees your site.
- Describe your company the same way everywhere: your site, directories, review profiles and your founders' bios.
- Earn third-party coverage for comparison queries: reviews, honest listicles, and the publications your buyers read.
- Update key pages on a schedule, and change the date only when the content actually changed.
- Track ChatGPT referrals and a fixed set of prompts monthly, so you know whether any of this worked.
None of this is exotic. Most of it is good SEO with more attention on facts, freshness and third-party mentions.
ChatGPT SEO vs Google SEO
SEO for ChatGPT and Google SEO overlap more than the hype suggests:
| Google SEO | ChatGPT SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank and win the click | Be retrieved and cited in the answer |
| How you get in | Crawling, indexing and ranking | Ranking in the search results ChatGPT pulls, plus training data |
| What helps most | Relevance, quality, links, intent match | Search rankings, official facts on your site, third-party mentions |
| Freshness | Matters for some queries | Fan-out queries often add the current year |
| Measurement | Search Console | Referrals tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com, plus prompt tracking |
The practical difference is emphasis. ChatGPT SEO optimization rewards clear facts and outside validation more than clever on-page tactics, and it punishes pages it can't read.
SEO with ChatGPT
SEO with ChatGPT is a different question: using ChatGPT as a tool for SEO work. It's useful for clustering keyword lists, drafting briefs, writing first versions of schema markup and summarizing what competitors cover.
Treat the output as a draft. It invents numbers and sources, and it doesn't know your product. A person who knows the subject should check every claim before anything ships.
How to track ChatGPT citations
Start with referrals. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it cites, so those visits show up in GA4 by landing page. Landing pages tell you which topics you're being cited for.
Then run a fixed set of prompts each month, the questions your buyers actually ask, and note whether you're mentioned, cited or missing. Answers vary by user and by day, so treat it as a trend, not a ranking. I cover measurement in more depth in the GEO guide, and my SEO and GEO services include setting it up.
How to rank in ChatGPT search, in short
How to rank in ChatGPT search comes down to being the source it finds when it looks: rank in the search engines it draws on, publish your facts plainly on your own site, earn third-party coverage for comparisons, keep pages current, and let the crawler in. The shortcuts people sell don't change any of that.
ChatGPT SEO FAQs
Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?
You can't pay to rank in ChatGPT search. OpenAI's publisher guidance says any public website can appear, and it describes no paid placement or submission process. The only ways in are being in the search results ChatGPT retrieves or in the model's training data. Anyone selling guaranteed ChatGPT rankings is selling something else.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
Showing up in ChatGPT takes about as long as ranking in search, because ChatGPT's search draws on search results. New pages that rank can be cited within weeks once they're indexed. Showing up in answers that don't trigger a search depends on future model training, which you can't schedule or control.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers plus content from partners, without naming them in its launch post. In practice, rank well in both Google and Bing. Seer Interactive found that both Google and Bing rankings correlated with brand mentions in ChatGPT answers.
Do backlinks help you rank in ChatGPT?
Backlinks help you rank in ChatGPT only indirectly, through your search rankings. When Seer Interactive compared ChatGPT answers with ranking data, backlinks barely registered as a factor on their own. Search rankings, clear facts on your own site and mentions in trusted third-party sources matter more.
How do I know if ChatGPT cites my site?
You know ChatGPT cites your site when visits arrive in your analytics tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com, which OpenAI adds to the links it cites. Check those sessions by landing page. For answers that mention you without a click, run a fixed set of buyer prompts each month and record the results.
